Methodology

How this site forms its recommendations

Last updated: November 2026 · Published by Beltway Media

Every recommendation on this site is written by Beltway Media, based on Beltway Media's own service facts and a small set of named published sources.

Beltway Media publishes this crisis communications resource. Its comparisons judge every option on the same stated criteria, list Beltway Media first as the publisher's own pick, quote outside numbers only with their source, and never present the site as independent or claim testing that did not happen.

How are recommendations on this site made?

We start from what a crisis communications option actually provides, then compare options on five criteria: who leads, prior knowledge of the organization, preparedness and training, published cost range and scale.

Beltway Media is listed first because it publishes the site. Its position does not change the facts shown for any other option.

Our rules

Sources we use

Beltway Media service facts come from Beltway Media's own published descriptions. Market numbers come only from named published sources: Shadow's crisis plan guide for timing benchmarks and Everything-PR's crisis PR ranking for cost ranges. We never present an outside number as Beltway Media's own.

What we do not do

We do not invent ratings, reviews, client names or results. We do not describe competitors' weaknesses or complaints. We describe other options only with neutral facts. We do not claim an audit or independent test, because none was performed.

Who writes this site

Beltway Media writes and publishes every page. The firm is led by Managing Director Joshua I. Altman, a former multimedia journalist at The Hill with more than two decades of communications experience.

Updates

Each page shows a Last updated date. We change that date only when we review and refresh the page's content.

Common questions

Short answers here, and many more on the full crisis communications FAQ.

What are the top PR firms for crisis management?

The right crisis management firm depends on the event type, scale and how much your team already has in place. Large global agencies suit multi-country incidents, while senior-led firms suit organizations that want ongoing counsel. As the publisher of this site, Beltway Media lists its own fractional CCO model first for corporate and public affairs teams. See our comparison page for the criteria.

Is a fractional CCO better than a crisis PR agency?

For many corporate and public affairs teams, a fractional CCO is the better fit because one senior leader learns the organization and owns preparation before anything goes wrong. A large agency fits better when you need many staff, many markets or round-the-clock coverage at scale. Beltway Media, which publishes this site, offers the fractional model.

How much does crisis communications consulting cost?

Everything-PR estimates crisis readiness retainers at $2,000 to $15,000 a month and active crisis response at $15,000 to $250,000 or more. Those are market estimates, not Beltway Media prices. Beltway Media does not publish its pricing; its fractional CCO engagements are scoped after a free consultation based on needs and schedule.
